MathWorks, the developer of popular mathematical computing software MATLAB and Simulink, has confirmed that a ransomware attack is responsible for its ongoing service disruptions. The Massachusetts-based company, which serves over 5 million customers across 100,000 organizations worldwide, disclosed the attack through an official incident report.

“MathWorks experienced a ransomware attack. We have notified federal law enforcement of this matter,” the company stated. “The attack affected our IT systems, making some online applications used by customers and certain internal systems unavailable beginning Sunday, May 18.”

While several services remain offline, including the cloud center, file exchange, license center, and MathWorks store, the company has made progress in restoring some functionality. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) and Single Sign On (SSO) capabilities were restored on May 21 after several days of downtime.

Despite these recovery efforts, users continue to experience issues. Some customers cannot create new accounts, while others who haven’t signed in since October 11, 2024, are unable to log in at all.

The company has not revealed which ransomware group is responsible for the attack or whether customer data was compromised during the breach. No ransomware operation has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack, suggesting MathWorks may be in negotiations or has potentially paid a ransom.

MathWorks has not provided additional comments regarding the incident when contacted by security researchers.
