Meta Platforms announced Wednesday that it’s introducing passkey support to Facebook, marking another step toward passwordless authentication across its platforms.

## What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys represent the next generation of login security, offering a simpler and more secure alternative to traditional passwords. Users can authenticate using biometrics (fingerprint or face recognition) or their device’s PIN code, eliminating the need to remember complex passwords.

## Rollout Timeline

The passkey feature will launch “soon” on Android and iOS devices for Facebook users. Meta’s Messenger platform will receive passkey support in the coming months. Additionally, users will be able to use passkeys to auto-fill payment information when making purchases through Meta Pay.

## Enhanced Security Benefits

According to Meta, passkeys provide superior protection compared to traditional passwords and SMS verification codes. The technology resists common cyber threats including:

– Password guessing attacks
– Theft by malicious websites
– Phishing scams
– Password spraying attacks

## Meta’s Broader Passkey Strategy

This isn’t Meta’s first venture into passkey technology. The company previously implemented passkey support for WhatsApp on Android in October 2023, followed by iOS support in April 2024. However, no timeline has been announced for bringing passkeys to Instagram.

Meta joins other tech giants embracing passwordless authentication. Microsoft recently made passkeys the default sign-in method for new consumer accounts, while Apple has enhanced its Passwords app to support passkey import and export across its ecosystem.
