The White House has unveiled the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a groundbreaking cybersecurity certification label for internet-connected consumer devices, set to debut in 2025. This initiative aims to help consumers identify secure smart devices through a distinctive shield logo and QR code system.
The certification covers various smart home products, including:
– Security cameras
– Smart TVs
– Internet-connected appliances
– Fitness trackers
– Climate control systems
– Baby monitors
To earn the Cyber Trust Mark, devices must meet NIST’s cybersecurity criteria:
– Unique and strong default passwords
– Regular software updates
– Data protection features
– Incident detection capabilities
Consumers can access detailed security information by scanning the QR code, including:
– Password change instructions
– Device configuration guidelines
– Update procedures
– Product support duration
– Update availability status
Major industry players including Amazon, Google, Best Buy, LG Electronics U.S.A., Logitech, and Samsung Electronics have already committed to the program. The FCC has approved 11 companies as Cybersecurity Label Administrators to oversee certification processes.
The initiative addresses growing concerns about cyber threats to home devices while encouraging manufacturers to prioritize cybersecurity in their products. Though voluntary, the program is expected to become a standard for consumer trust in smart device security, similar to the impact of EnergyStar labels on energy efficiency.
