Australia has implemented a ban on Kaspersky Lab security software installations across government systems, citing significant national security risks. The decision, announced by Department of Home Affairs Secretary Stephanie Foster PSM, addresses concerns about foreign interference, espionage, and sabotage.
The new directive (002-2025) requires all government entities to:
– Cease installation of Kaspersky products and web services
– Remove existing Kaspersky software by April 1, 2025
– Manage risks associated with Kaspersky’s data collection practices
– Obtain special exemptions for legitimate business purposes, with appropriate security measures
The ban stems from concerns over Kaspersky’s extensive user data collection and potential exposure to foreign government directives that conflict with Australian law. Limited exemptions may be granted for compliance and law enforcement functions, subject to strict time limitations.
This action follows the United States’ similar ban in June 2024, which prohibited Kaspersky from selling products and providing updates to existing customers, leading to the company’s exit from the U.S. market in July 2024.
