Former CIA Analyst Pleads Guilty to Leaking Classified Defense Information

A 34-year-old former CIA analyst, Asif William Rahman, has pleaded guilty to transmitting classified National Defense Information (NDI) to unauthorized individuals. Rahman, who held a Top Secret security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) since 2016, faces up to 10 years in prison.

According to court documents, Rahman’s illegal activities occurred throughout 2024. In spring, he smuggled five classified documents from his workplace to his residence. In fall, he shared an additional 10 Top Secret documents. The most significant breach occurred on October 17, when he leaked two Top Secret documents about a U.S. ally’s planned military actions against a foreign adversary. These documents subsequently appeared on social media platforms, reportedly relating to Israel’s plans regarding Iran.

Rahman attempted to conceal his actions by:
– Altering documents to hide their source
– Deleting files
– Modifying journal entries
– Creating false narratives about his activities

The group, part of a larger six-member operation, conducted unauthorized surveillance of critical infrastructure from December 2024 to January 2025.

Deng, a software engineer with ties to China’s People’s Liberation Army university, used a specially equipped vehicle with ICT systems for intelligence gathering. Three other members, including two engineers and a financier, remain in China. The operation targeted various regions across Luzon, collecting detailed terrain and structural information without government authorization.
