The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has introduced the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a new cybersecurity certification program for Internet-of-Things (IoT) consumer devices. This initiative aims to help consumers identify products that meet robust security standards through a distinctive label and QR code system.
The program covers various smart home devices, including:
– Security cameras
– Voice-activated shopping devices
– Smart appliances
– Fitness trackers
– Garage door openers
– Baby monitors
When consumers scan the QR code on certified products, they’ll access detailed information about:
– Device security features
– Software update policies
– Support duration
– Password management
– Security configuration guidelines
Notable exclusions from the program include FDA-regulated medical devices, NHTSA-regulated vehicles, wired devices, and industrial equipment. Products from companies on national security restriction lists or the FCC’s Covered List are also ineligible.
To obtain certification, manufacturers must:
1. Meet eligibility criteria
2. Have products tested by FCC-recognized CyberLABs
3. Submit applications to Cybersecurity Label Administrators
4. Comply with NIST cybersecurity standards
The program employs third-party administrators and accredited laboratories to maintain testing integrity and compliance verification, ensuring consumers can make informed decisions about the cybersecurity of their smart home devices.
