Windows Audio Crisis: Microsoft's January Update Silences DAC Users

Audio Issues Plague Windows Systems After January 2025 Security Updates

Microsoft has acknowledged a significant audio playback issue affecting multiple Windows versions following the January 2025 security updates. The problem specifically impacts systems using external Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) with USB 1.0 audio drivers.

Affected Systems:
– Windows 24H2 (KB5050009)
– Windows 10 22H2 (KB5049981)
– Windows Server 2019 (KB5050008)
– Windows Server 2016 (KB5049993)

The issue manifests as non-functioning USB audio devices and may display a Code 10 error in Device Manager, indicating insufficient system resources. DACs, which are crucial components in professional music studios, home audio setups, and portable music players, are primarily used to enhance audio quality and convert digital signals to analog output.

Microsoft is actively investigating the problem and developing a solution. In the interim, users are advised to bypass their DAC devices and connect audio equipment directly to their PCs.

A separate but related issue affects Windows 24H2 users with Creative Sound BlasterX G6 USB DAC systems, causing unexpected maximum volume levels during gaming sessions.

The company continues to monitor and address these audio-related challenges, with updates expected to be released once solutions are developed.
