Microsoft Resolves Critical Office Crash Issue on Windows Servers

Microsoft has successfully addressed a significant issue that caused Microsoft 365 applications and Classic Outlook to crash on Windows Server 2016 and 2019 platforms. The problem emerged following a recent Office update that incorporated the React Native framework, specifically affecting users who upgraded to Version 2412 (Build 18324.20168).

The issue, first reported on Tuesday, caused applications including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to crash within seconds of launching. Microsoft promptly released a fix through an Office Suite update on Thursday.

For organizations with automatic updates enabled through the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN), the fix will be applied automatically. The company plans to roll out this update gradually starting January 16th, 2025 (PST).

Temporary Solution Available:
Users who cannot immediately access the update can implement a manual workaround by reverting to Version 2411 (Build 18227.20162) through Command Prompt commands:
1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
2. Execute:
– cd %programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun
– officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.18227.20152

To prevent automatic updates to the problematic version, users can disable updates through File > Office Account > Update Options > Disable Updates. It’s recommended to re-enable updates by February 11th.

This resolution follows recent Microsoft 365 service issues, including an MFA outage and authentication problems that affected Office web applications and admin center access.
