Google NotebookLM Gets Smarter: Now Powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash for Deeper Reasoning

# Google NotebookLM Upgrades to Gemini 2.5 Flash for Enhanced Research Capabilities

Google’s research and note-taking tool NotebookLM is receiving a significant upgrade with the integration of Gemini 2.5 Flash technology. This enhancement brings improved reasoning capabilities to the platform’s text-based features while maintaining its independent status from the Gemini app.

## Enhanced Reasoning Power

NotebookLM, known for its innovative Audio Overviews feature that provides podcast-style summaries, will now leverage Gemini 2.5 Flash’s advanced reasoning abilities. As part of Google’s “thinking models” series, the 2.5 Flash variant delivers:

– Deeper reasoning capabilities
– Faster processing speeds
– More cost-effective operation
– Improved handling of complex, multi-step questions

## Limited Scope of Upgrade

Google has clarified that this upgrade specifically targets the text-based question and answer functionality within NotebookLM. The popular Audio Overviews feature remains unchanged for now, though user feedback is being collected for potential future improvements.

“This will currently only impact the Q&A but great feedback for our audio overviews team,” the NotebookLM team confirmed in a social media post.

## Mobile App Coming Soon

In addition to the AI upgrade, Google announced that NotebookLM will soon be available as a dedicated mobile application. Android and iOS users can expect the app to launch on May 20, expanding access to this research tool across platforms.

NotebookLM will continue to operate as a standalone product, separate from Google’s Gemini assistant app.
