Microsoft has announced a significant change to its Authenticator app, with plans to discontinue the password storage and autofill features beginning July 2025, with complete removal by August 2025. This strategic decision aims to consolidate credential management exclusively within Microsoft Edge.

## Timeline for Feature Removal

* **June 2025**: Users will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator
* **July 2025**: Autofill functionality will cease working and stored payment information will be deleted
* **August 2025**: All saved passwords and unsaved generated passwords will become inaccessible

## Migration to Microsoft Edge

Users wishing to continue using their saved passwords for autofill must transition to Microsoft Edge on their mobile devices. Microsoft explains that “saved passwords and addresses are securely synced to your Microsoft account, and you can continue to access them and enjoy seamless autofill functionality with Microsoft Edge.”

To complete the migration:
1. Navigate to ‘Autofill/Passwords’ in device settings
2. Select Edge as the preferred service
3. Launch Edge and sign in with your Microsoft account
4. Verify passwords are accessible via Settings > Passwords in Edge

## Options for Users Who Don’t Want Edge

For those preferring alternative password managers, Microsoft allows password export, but this must be completed before August 1, 2025. Payment information must be exported by July 2025.

To export passwords from Authenticator:
1. Select menu > Settings > Autofill > Export Passwords
2. Choose an export location and tap ‘Save’

* Only account passwords can be imported to other services
* Payment information will require manual re-entry for security reasons
* Passkeys will continue to be supported in Authenticator
* Users utilizing Passkeys for Microsoft Account sign-in should keep the app enabled as their Passkey Provider
