Microsoft is bringing its AI-powered Copilot Chat feature to core Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote for business customers at no additional cost.

## What is Copilot Chat?

Copilot Chat is Microsoft’s content-aware AI assistant that understands what users are working on and provides tailored responses based on open files. Unlike the premium Microsoft 365 Copilot service, this free version only accesses web-based information rather than organizational data.

“It’s content aware, meaning it quickly understands what you’re working on, tailoring answers to the file you have open,” explained Seth Patton, general manager of Microsoft 365 Copilot product marketing. The feature appears in a side panel, reducing the need to switch between applications or copy-paste content.

## Availability and Requirements

The free Copilot Chat is available to users with specific Microsoft 365 licenses, including:
– Microsoft 365 Business accounts
– Microsoft Teams licenses
– Office 365 subscriptions
– Entra account users

For organizations wanting broader AI capabilities, Microsoft offers a premium upgrade. The paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license provides access to all organizational data, including personal documents, emails, meetings, and chat history.

## Automatic Installation Plans

Starting next month through mid-November, Microsoft will automatically install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices outside the European Economic Area. IT administrators can opt out of this automatic deployment through the Apps Admin Center if needed.

## Future Expansion

Microsoft continues expanding Copilot’s reach, with plans to integrate Microsoft 365 Copilot agents into the Edge browser sidebar by late September 2025, making AI assistance available across more user workflows.

This rollout represents Microsoft’s strategy to democratize AI tools across its productivity suite while maintaining premium tiers for advanced organizational features.
