Microsoft is revolutionizing the classic Notepad application by introducing powerful AI-driven writing capabilities for Windows 11 users with Copilot+ PCs. This significant update transforms the simple text editor into an intelligent writing assistant, marking a major evolution for one of Windows’ most enduring applications.
## What’s New in AI-Powered Notepad
The enhanced Notepad now includes three core AI features:
– **Text Summarization**: Quickly condense lengthy content into key points
– **Text Rewriting**: Improve clarity and style of existing text
– **Text Generation**: Create new content based on prompts
These features, previously exclusive to Microsoft 365 subscribers, are now available free of charge for Copilot+ PC users. Currently, the functionality supports English content only and is being tested with Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels running Notepad version 11.2508.28.0.
## Flexible AI Model Options
Users with Microsoft 365 subscriptions gain additional flexibility, allowing them to switch between local and cloud-based AI models depending on their needs. Those without subscriptions can still access the features using local AI processing.
“Notepad now supports AI features like Summarize, Write, and Rewrite on Copilot+ PCs, with no subscription required,” explained Dave Grochocki, Principal Group Product Manager for Windows Inbox Apps. “This makes premium AI more accessible and flexible for everyone.”
## User Control and Privacy
Microsoft recognizes that not all users want AI integration in their text editor. Users can easily disable these features through settings or revert to the traditional notepad.exe program if they prefer the classic experience.
## Notepad’s Ongoing Evolution
Since its major redesign in December 2021, Notepad has continuously evolved beyond its basic text editing roots. Recent additions include:
– Multiple tab support
– Built-in character counter
– Text formatting options
– Spell-check and autocorrect functionality
## Additional Windows App Updates
Microsoft is also enhancing other core Windows applications:
– **Paint**: Now supports Photoshop-like project files and opacity controls for drawing tools
– **Snipping Tool**: Features new “Quick markup” capabilities for faster screenshot annotation
This AI integration represents Microsoft’s broader strategy to embed intelligent features throughout the Windows ecosystem, making advanced technology more accessible to everyday users while maintaining the simplicity that has made Notepad a staple application for decades.
