Microsoft has implemented significant improvements to text rendering in all Chromium-based web browsers on Windows, addressing long-standing readability issues. The enhancement brings better text contrast and gamma correction to the Chromium open-source project, affecting browsers like Google Chrome 132 and Microsoft Edge.
The update aligns text rendering quality in Chromium browsers with native Windows applications, ensuring consistent clarity across the system. Users can fine-tune their experience using the Windows ClearType Text Tuner, accessible through the Start menu’s “Adjust ClearType text” option.
The previous text blurriness issues stemmed from the Skia text rendering engine used by Chromium browsers, which produced lighter text, particularly affecting CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) characters. While the original Microsoft Edge avoided this problem by using DirectWrite DirectX API, the switch to Chromium brought these rendering challenges to the new Edge browser.
Microsoft is actively seeking user feedback on these improvements through the Edge browser’s feedback feature. Users of other Chromium-based browsers can report issues through the Chromium bug tracker. This update builds upon previous font rendering improvements introduced to Edge Canary builds in June 2021, which enhanced compatibility with user ClearType settings.
