Microsoft's WSUS Driver Updates End in 90 Days: What IT Admins Need to Know

Microsoft Announces End of WSUS Driver Synchronization, Pushes Cloud Solutions

Microsoft has announced that Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) driver synchronization will be discontinued on April 18, 2025, marking a significant shift in Windows update management. This change comes as part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to transition enterprises toward cloud-based solutions.

After the deprecation date, administrators will still be able to access drivers through the Microsoft Update catalog but won’t have the ability to import them into WSUS. Microsoft is directing organizations to alternative solutions, including Device Driver Packages, Microsoft Intune, and Windows Autopatch.

While WSUS itself was deprecated in September 2024, Microsoft confirmed it will maintain existing functionality and continue publishing updates through the platform. The service, which debuted in 2005 as Software Update Services (SUS), has been crucial for IT administrators managing updates across large Windows networks.

Microsoft’s recommended alternatives for future update management include:
– Windows Autopatch
– Azure Update Manager
– Microsoft Intune

These cloud-based solutions align with Microsoft’s vision for modern enterprise device management, offering enhanced capabilities and integration with their cloud ecosystem. The change reflects Microsoft’s strategic shift away from on-premises update management toward cloud-centric solutions.
