OpenAI’s Operator feature, currently available in research preview for $200 Pro subscribers, is poised to become a “very useful tool” following upcoming enhancements, according to Jerry Tworek, VP of Research at OpenAI.

## What is Operator?

Introduced in January, Operator functions as an AI agent designed to automate repetitive browser tasks that typically don’t require human attention. Instead of manually browsing the internet, users can delegate tasks to Operator, such as filling out forms or ordering food and groceries.

However, in its current state, Operator has limited productivity value and often struggles with basic tasks, leaving many users underwhelmed by its performance.

## Upcoming Improvements

During a recent Reddit ask-me-anything (AMA) session, Tworek revealed that OpenAI has planned “several significant improvements” for Operator.

“We also already have a product surface that can do things on your computer – it’s called operator, it’s still a research preview, but we’re planning to make some improvements soon and it can become a very useful tool then,” Tworek stated.

He also hinted at the possibility of integrating various tools into a unified platform. This aligns with OpenAI’s previously confirmed plans to incorporate multiple products or models into GPT-5, the company’s next foundational model.

These developments suggest that OpenAI is working toward creating a more cohesive ecosystem of AI tools that can handle increasingly complex tasks with greater reliability.
