Microsoft has rolled out hotpatch updates for Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 on x64 systems, offering business customers a more efficient way to implement security updates without disrupting workflow.
## What Are Hotpatch Updates?
Hotpatch technology allows security updates to be installed in the background without requiring system reboots. This works by patching the in-memory code of running processes, maintaining system uptime while enhancing security.
“With hotpatch updates, you can quickly take measures to help protect your organization from cyberattacks, while minimizing user disruptions,” Microsoft announced in their update. Under this system, devices will only need to restart for updates four months out of the year, with the remaining eight months utilizing the reboot-free hotpatch technology.
## Requirements for Hotpatch Implementation
To enable hotpatching, organizations need:
– A qualifying Microsoft subscription (Windows 11 Enterprise E3/E5/F3, Education A3/A5, or Windows 365 Enterprise)
– Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 with current baseline updates
– x64 AMD or Intel CPU
– Virtualization-based Security (VBS) enabled
– Microsoft Intune for managing update deployment
## Deployment Process
Eligible devices will receive hotpatch updates quarterly, following the same ring deployment schedule as standard updates. Administrators can enable this feature through the Microsoft Intune admin center by creating a Windows quality update policy.
For Arm64 devices, hotpatch updates remain in public preview. Administrators can temporarily enable compatibility by setting a specific registry key (HotPatchRestrictions=1) until full support becomes available.
## Expansion of Hotpatch Technology
Microsoft first introduced hotpatching for Windows Server Azure Edition in February 2022, later expanding to Windows Server 2025 (preview) in September 2024, and now to Windows 11 24H2 and Windows 365.
Devices running older Windows versions will continue to receive standard monthly security updates, ensuring consistent protection across mixed environments.
