WhatsApp has launched a new artificial intelligence feature called Message Summaries, designed to help users quickly understand their unread conversations without compromising privacy.

## How the Feature Works

The Message Summaries feature uses Meta AI to automatically generate brief overviews of unread messages in chat conversations. This allows users to grasp the main points of their conversations before diving into detailed reading. Currently, the feature is available in English for users in the United States, with expansion to other regions and languages planned for later this year.

## Privacy-First Design

WhatsApp has prioritized user privacy in developing this feature. Message Summaries is optional and disabled by default, giving users complete control over its activation. Additionally, users can enable “Advanced Chat Privacy” settings to select which specific chats can utilize AI-related features.

## Advanced Security Technology

The feature operates through WhatsApp’s Private Processing technology, introduced in April 2024. This system processes AI requests within a secure cloud environment called a confidential virtual machine (CVM). It establishes protected connections between user devices and a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) using Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) protocols.

Crucially, this technology ensures that neither Meta, WhatsApp, nor any third parties can access actual message content during the summarization process. Other chat participants also cannot see when someone has used the summary feature, maintaining complete privacy throughout the interaction.

## Regulatory Context

This launch occurs amid heightened security scrutiny, as the U.S. House of Representatives recently added WhatsApp to its list of applications banned from government-issued devices due to security concerns.
