Sensata Technologies, an industrial technology company specializing in sensors and electrical protection components, has fallen victim to a ransomware attack that encrypted portions of its network and significantly disrupted operations.

According to an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the attack occurred on Sunday, April 6, and included data theft. “The incident has temporarily impacted Sensata’s operations, including shipping, receiving, manufacturing production, and various other support functions,” the company reported.

With annual revenue of $4 billion in 2023, Sensata develops and manufactures sensor-rich solutions for automotive, aerospace, and industrial applications. The company has immediately initiated restoration efforts for critical functions affected by the cyberattack, though no timeline for complete recovery has been provided.

External cybersecurity experts assisting with the preliminary investigation have confirmed that attackers exfiltrated data from the company’s network—a common tactic employed by ransomware groups to increase pressure on victims and create additional legal complications. Sensata is currently working to determine exactly what files were stolen and has committed to notifying affected individuals and regulatory authorities as required.

While Sensata does not anticipate any material impact on its financial results for the quarter ending June 30, the company acknowledged this assessment could change once the full scope of the security incident becomes clear.

As of now, no ransomware group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack.
