
Microsoft has successfully addressed several significant issues affecting Windows Server 2025 systems with high core counts. The problems, which were first acknowledged in October, primarily impacted servers with more than 256 logical processors.
## Issues Resolved
Affected systems previously experienced a range of symptoms including:
– Failed or stalled installation and upgrade processes
– Extended server start-up times (up to three hours in some cases)
– Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors when launching applications or restarting
– Inconsistent triggering of these issues across impacted servers
## Solution and Verification
The fixes have been implemented in updates released since the KB5046617 cumulative update from November’s Patch Tuesday. Microsoft recommends installing the latest security updates to resolve these problems.
IT administrators can verify if their systems are affected by checking the logical processor count in Windows Task Manager’s Performance tab. Systems showing more than 256 logical processors were vulnerable to these issues.
## Temporary Workaround
For administrators unable to immediately install the latest updates, Microsoft provides a workaround:
1. Enter UEFI Setup during server restart
2. Navigate to core configuration settings
3. Adjust cores per socket to ensure total logical processors remain at or below 256
4. Restart the server
The total logical processor count is calculated by: (number of sockets × cores per socket × logical processors per core).
