Microsoft’s ambitious plan to introduce Dynamic Wallpapers in Windows 11 has been officially shelved, as revealed by recent system updates. The feature, which would have brought animated, interactive desktop backgrounds to users, was initially developed as part of a broader initiative for low-end student devices.

Former Microsoft designer Sergey Kisselev disclosed that the Dynamic Wallpapers project was specifically designed to complement Windows 11’s centered interface elements, including the Start Menu and taskbar. The feature was meant to showcase the operating system’s new design language and create a more engaging desktop experience.

Technical traces of the unfinished Dynamic Wallpapers functionality remained present in Windows 11 version 23H2 but have been completely removed from the upcoming 24H2 update, as reported by Microsoft observer Albacore. While similar functionality exists through third-party applications like Lively Wallpaper, Microsoft’s native implementation will not see the light of day.

The cancellation’s timing coincides with organizational changes at Microsoft, including the departure of Panos Panay, and may reflect the company’s shifting focus toward artificial intelligence and productivity features. The exact reasoning behind the project’s discontinuation remains undisclosed by Microsoft.

This development marks another instance of a promising Windows 11 feature that was conceived but ultimately abandoned before reaching end users.
