OpenAI is gearing up to release three new AI models in the coming weeks, according to references discovered in the ChatGPT web app. The upcoming models are expected to be called “o3,” “o4-mini,” and “o4-mini-high.”
## Current ChatGPT Model Lineup
Currently, ChatGPT offers five different models:
– GPT-4o (non-reasoning model)
– GPT-4.5 (non-reasoning model with enhanced creativity)
– Three reasoning models: o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high
The existing o3-mini and o3-mini-high are smaller versions in the o-series that provide improved performance and faster response times, but the full o3 model has not yet been released.
## What’s Coming
The three new models in development include:
– **o3**: The complete reasoning model in the o3 series
– **o4-mini** and **o4-mini-high**: New models with enhanced reasoning capabilities
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed these plans in a recent post on X, stating: “We are going to release o3 and o4-mini after all, probably in a couple of weeks, and then do GPT-5 in a few months.”
Altman explained that the company decided on this release schedule because they discovered GPT-5 could be “much better than originally thought.” He also noted challenges in integrating everything smoothly and the need to ensure sufficient capacity for “unprecedented demand.”
While the exact launch date remains unconfirmed, the references in ChatGPT’s web app indicate that preparations are well underway for these new models, which will precede the eventual release of GPT-5, expected to be a unified reasoning model.
